More Water and Pee Diapers

We took LB to the doctors yesterday. Everywhere I look I saw the symptoms of DI. And the biggest hit was when she woke up in the middle of the night coughing and screaming, inconsolable. Rocking, her paci, walking around - nothing worked. So I told Dennis to get her a bit of water and once she had that she went right back to sleep. So the next morning I called Endo, "Am I just super paranoid or is it getting worse?" And got in with our pedi who determined she wasn't dehydrated but that the symptoms definitely fit with DI. So we stayed and got a urinalysis and another blood test for a sodium check. Getting a urinalysis on a baby is super hard. If you've had it done you understand...they stick a bag on her girl parts and wait for her to pee. It sucks because if it comes off it all goes in the diaper. Well, it came off twice, but Lily had no problem doing 3 separate urinalysis's and the last one we got a good sample. That in and of itself showed the pediatrician how often she is peeing. And the labs came back showing how diluted her urine was (which is bad, showing that her body isn't holding onto her water) but her sodium came back 147 so all the water we've been giving her has been helping bring her sodium down.

So now we are still going to start on the DDAVP on Monday (or whenever the medicine gets delivered to us) And we are going to try doing it as an outpatient, starting with the smallest dose available. This medication should help her hold onto her water and not pee as much, which should drop her sodium to a healthy level. We will have to get sodium checks every morning for a week probably. And if she doesn't respond to the medicine then we will probably have to be admitted. This medication has to be given every 12 hours and works within hours, which means I should be able to tell the day we start. Endo said we would be able to tell right away with less diapers and would also be able to tell when the medicine starts to wear off because she'll start peeing lots more again.

Fun stuff to look forward to. But we're thankful we're not being admitted right now. We're also trying to look at the positive side of this. Hopefully we're catching this early and we're wondering if perhaps this could be the last missing piece and maybe it will help her growth and perhaps even her eating!? That could be hoping for too much though.

So, we should be starting the medicine sometime Monday or Tuesday. We'll be spending all day Monday at UNC for endo check up and the feeding specialist. Anyone in Chapel Hill want to have lunch or hang out? :P
